The soundscape of a city is a huge aspect of how people experience the ‘energy’ of a city. Research has shown that too much noise is can be bad for human and animal health.
Myself, Pete Benett (digital artist) and Jameson Musyoki (acoustician) got together to explore how the soundscape of the city could be improved and what the general public would regard as a better sound experience for the city.
We proposed the “Building Instruments” to investigate how we could go about creating a city which sounded better by artistically experimenting with sound masking techniques. I led from the academic side as principle investigator. The project was funded by the Brigstow Institute’s seedcord award.
