I was approached to design GPS sensors to monitor terrapin turtles.
My clients project was to assist marine biologists in tracking very small Terapin Turtles when they come to nest. Due to the size of terrapin turtles (on average only 13 cm long) the trackers needed to be very small indeed. As the battery was the heavest component, the latest ultra-low-power technologies were used while still providing LoRaWAN radio to transfer the data.
I arranged manufacture of the prototype circuit boards and made contributions to my client’s firmware development process.
Their open-source trackers are still under development but take a look at their Github pages for details of their project.
